Never played paintball before? Here are the basics:
Learn the rules for each event... -Do gun hits count? -How do we re-spawn and where? -How are points awarded? -Can you bring your own paint? -Is there a 10 foot rule? -Are shields allowed? -Are extra pods permitted on the field? -Are extra air tanks permitted on the field?
Tank Regulator - What is a paintball tank regulator? The reg on your tank takes the pressure from the air tank's bottle and regulates it to the proper output pressure to the marker.
Paintball Terminology:
More Information:
Air Ball Field Terms:
-A couple of layers of clothes, usually clothes you don't mind ruining. Long sleeve and pants are recommended. (Dark Colors, brights will stand out like a sore thumb) -Clothes to change into for the ride home -Extra Socks -Water, Food, and Snacks (Some fields supply food, some don't) -A towel or rag -Boots/Cleats/Extra shoes -Sun Screen and a hat of some sort (We are outside all day) -A sense of adventure
Never break the seal of the goggles from around your face.
Never deliberately shoot at the head or neck.
No Blind Firing. Players must always be looking at their targets while shooting.
Barrel covers are required. Players may never remove their barrel covers outside of the play area. Don't use plastic barrel plugs, they are insufficient.
No shooting or dry firing in the neutral area or in the parking lot. If you need to test your gun, go to the chrono area.
All guns must be chronograph-ed before being used. Players are randomly checked throughout the day.
Don't do stupid shit... -No climbing on trees, structures, through windows, or on bunkers. -Don't argue with other players or refs. -When discussing, stay calm and polite. It's fine to question a call or if someone's out if you do it with respect and zero hostility. -Don't wipe. This is just scummy. We will not want to play with you if you wipe. -Don't be lazy, enter the re-spawn area like you're supposed to. There's no such thing as close enough.
Be loud when you call yourself out... Yell OUT 3x! and raise your hand or gun in the air and keep it in the air when returning to respawn. If you aren't loud and obvious when out, don't complain when you're hit 10 more times.
Airball Field - What is a paintball airball field? An airball field is a paintball course that is comprised mostly or solely of inflated bunkers. (Also sometimes referred to as a Speedball field)
ASA - ASA is short for Air Source Adapter. It is a threaded port that the CO2 or Compressed Air tank screws into.
Barrel Cover - What is a paintball barrel cover? Also known as a barrel condom or barrel sock, a barrel cover is a device that slips over the muzzle end of the barrel, usually with an elastic strap to go around the loader or back of the marker. They are considered safer than the older barrel plugs.
Bounce - What is paintball bounce? When a paintball hits you but does not break, that is known as a bounce. If a ball bounces you are typically still in the game but it depends on the rules of that game or field.
Breech - What is a paintball marker breech? The breech is the area in a marker's body where a paintball loads into, and sits before being fired.
Burst Mode - What is paintball burst mode? This mode fires a set amount of shots per trigger pull, typically three shots.
Chop - What is a paintball chop? When the bolt is clipping or cutting the paintball as it enters the breech, that is known as a paintball chop or breech break. It is identified by shell and paint in the breech and on the bolt of the marker.
Chronograph - What is a paintball chronograph? A chronograph or "Chrono" is an electronic device that measures the velocity of a paintball when fired in Feet Per Second (FPS). They are required for safe play. Every marker must be "Chrono-ed" before being used. 300 FPS or less is typical.
Feed Neck - What is a paintball feed neck? A feed neck is where a hopper / loader connects to the marker.
FPS - What is FPS in paintball? FPS is short for Feet Per Second. This is the unit of measure for the speed at which a paintball leaves the muzzle of the barrel. 300 FPS is the max velocity for safe outdoor play.
Hopper - What does a paintball hopper do? A hopper, sometimes called a loader, is where paintballs are loaded into. A hopper typically is attached over the breech by a feed neck. Hoppers come as either Gravity fed (Shake and shoot), or electronic. The Rotor and Spire are considered two of the best electronic hoppers.
HPA - What is a paintball HPA tank? HPA is short for High Pressure Air, also known as a compressed air, N2, Nitro, or Nitrous tank. It uses compressed air delivered through a regulator to pressurize the paintball marker. Air/HPA tanks can be differentiated from CO2 tanks by the pressure gauge. CO2 tanks do not have any gauges.
Hydro Date - What is a hydro date in paintball? A hydrostatic date is the date on which an air cylinder was hydro tested for safety. All compressed cylinders have a hydro date stamped or affixed to the bottle when manufactured. All tanks must be re-hydro tested based on their type (5 years). A tank out of hydro date compliance cannot be filled.
Mag Fed - What is Mag Fed Paintball? Mag Fed Paintball markers do not use hoppers, instead the paintball are fed from a cartridge.
Mechanical Marker - What is a mechanical paintball gun? A mechanical paintball gun fires the paintball without any electronic operation to activate the marker and usually doesn't require a battery.
Milsim - What is Milsim Paintball? Short for MIlitary Simulation, milsim paintball is a style of paintball play using markers and gear modeled on actual military weapons and equipment.
Paint Check - If you're ever unsure whether a paintball left a mark, ask a ref or a near by teammate todo a paint check. Point to the area you think you got hit and say “Paint Check” They'll let you know if you're still in the game.
Pump - What is a pump paintball gun? The first paintball guns were pump action. Pump markers are still popular for players wanting a challenge.
Ramping - What is ramping in paintball? Ramping, also known as turbo mode, is a setting in an electronic marker that adds extra shots after a certain number of trigger pulls. For example, a ramping mode that does 1.33 shots per trigger pull will fire 4 shots with only three pulls. Ramping is prohibited in many tournaments and commercial fields.
Remote Line - What is a paintball remote line? A remote line is a hose that runs to your marker from an air tank carried on your back. Remote lines are often flexible coils for ease of use. Remote lines are popular in woodsball, big games, and scenario games for using huge air tanks without adding weight to the marker.
Scenario - What is scenario paintball? Scenario games have a story line, players in character, and multiple objectives for points. Scenario games are usually won by skillful strategy and role play as opposed to outshooting the other team.
Shooting Hot - What is "shooting hot" in paintball? "Shooting Hot", also known as having a hot gun, is when a marker is firing over the maximum allowable velocity at a particular field or event. Usually 300 FPS.
Speedball - What is speedball paintball? Speedball is a generic name for playing paintball on concept fields like inflated air bunker or other non-woods/ tactical fields.
Splatter - Splatter occurs when an enemy's paintball hit a near by object and the "Splatter" lands on your person. This does not count as a hit. If it splatters off your pods, vest, or mask however... you're out.
Squeegee - What does a paintball sgueegee do? A paintball squeegee is a device used to clean broken paintballs from the marker's barrel.
Wiping - Wiping is cheating by wiping off a clean hit and continuing to play. Don't do it!
Doesn't it hurt when you get shot?
The paint pellets break open upon impact, and generally cause very little pain. What pain is experienced is more of a stinging sensation from the pellet's impact against the skin or through clothing. In my experience, the stinging pain goes away after a few seconds. Of course, the closer you are to the muzzle of the gun, the higher the velocity of the pellet when it hits you. Thus, more pain may be experienced when shot at close range rather than farther away. In general, one can count on coming off the field with a few welts from paintball impacts, but your most annoying injuries are more likely to be scrapes and bruises from the local terrain.
What does it cost to play?
Depends on the game, field, and what you need... Admission can be between $10 - $60 per person Paint costs between $40 - $85 per case and if you need rental equipment it's usually about $15.
Is Paintball Safe?
You are going to be surprised at how safe paintball is compared to other sports. In the United States there are 0.2 injuries per 100,000 exposures for paintball a year. That compares to:
3.8 injuries per 100,000 exposures for Tackle Football 3.7 injuries per 100,000 exposures for Ice Hockey a year 2.8 injuries per 100,000 exposures for Soccer a year 2.8 injuries per 100,000 exposures for Baseball a year
In fact, paintball has one of the lowest injury rates of any sport in the United States.
How long does a paintball game last?
Games can last anywhere from one minute for intense spectator-style “speedball” games, to 24 hours of non-stop action for a weekend-long scenario event. An average recreational game in the woods lasts between 15 minutes to an hour. A typical game played on a tournament-style field lasts about three to ten minutes.
Will paintball paint wash out of my clothes?
Yes! Paintball paint is water soluble. Mud ruins more clothes then paint balls do.
What should I bring for a day of paintball?
I don't have any gear, is that ok?
Absolutely! Paintball is about having fun with friends, not about showing off your junk. Not only do we have extra markers to loan but we trade and change things up throughout the day. There's also usually rentals available for cheap. Rentals are usually tippmann's which are good reliable guns!
How often does your mask fog?
When it's too hot, too cold, or very humid your mask tends to fog ALOT. That's why I always say the first and most important piece of gear you should buy yourself is a nice mask that doesn't fog. Built in fans are worthless in my opinion. Your best bet is to spend $80 on a Dye i4 or newer paintball mask. Avoid wearing glasses under your mask as they will fog easily.

10 foot Rule - What is a 10 or 20 foot rule? When approaching an enemy player from behind, some games/fields require you to call for a surrender when within that distance. This is often the case at fields that allow players to bring their own paint and is always a good idea when playing against young kids. If the player ignores your call to surrender, feel free to end them.
